This model is supposed to replace its predecessor, the Boss Audio BASS600 8-Inch Low-Profile Amplified Subwoofer (Single) from last year. There were no reviews posted for the BASS900 when I bought it, but I assumed the product would be no different from last years model. I was wrong.

The sound is great. When I first installed the product, I had the gain set at 1/2 and the bass boost set at 1/2. Plenty of kick from a small package. But after a few days, I noticed I wasn’t hearing anymore bass. When I turned my stereo off then on, the sub would work for about 30 seconds before the circuit protection light would turn red and the sub turned off. I turned the gain down to 1/4 and the bass boost down to 1/4, the bass was so quiet I could barely hear it. Nevertheless, the circuit protection light still came on after 30 seconds. After a few infuriating drives to work (I work an hour from home) having to turn my stereo on and off constantly to hear the bass, I decided to return the product to Amazon. Amazon is a great business, unfortunately this product is faulty.

Can you really buy a compact powered sub for $120? Yes you can but it’s garbage. At first glance the unit appears to be quality made. It’s quite heavy, the finish is nice if you care, and it has a lot of features. It even sounds good. For about 3 days.

The first one I bought sounded decent after a simple install. Definite improvement over the OEM sub in my 08 WRX. After about 3 days of driving (maybe a total of 4 hours in the car) I noticed the sub wasn’t working. The circuit protect light was on. Restarting the car turned the light off. But sure enough it started doing this every time I turned the thing on. Reading around the web, you will find a ton of people complaining about this exact issue. I checked all the physical connections and measured the power and remote wires to verify they had the correct voltage. All good. Checked the entire power wire for nicks or short circuits. All good. Does this even with the gain turned all the way down. It’s not a temp issue because it does this after about 1 minute of operation in my driveway at 7AM in Oregon when it’s 40 degrees F inside the car. The thing was defective so I sent it back.

Received the second one overnight from Amazon. Excellent service. Installed, worked right away. 3 days later, surprise this one goes into circuit protect! I’m done. This is going to be the third time I’ve taken apart my center console in 2 weeks and I’m pissed now. I will never buy a Boss product again. If you want to roll the dice with a budget manufacturer then go for it (I do every so often and did in this case). But be aware, everything you read negative about these subs is 100% true based on my experience.

UPDATE: Similar to what others have experienced, my subwoofer has died after 5 weeks…goes into protection mode about 90 seconds after turn-on. Working on a return now…

This all-in-one amplifier/subwoofer is perfect for my situation. Hooked up to an Alpine IVA-W505 head unit, and paired with four JL C2-600X door speakers, it provides just enough kick to know it’s there without overwhelming the other speakers, in a compact case that would fit a variety of locations. Wanted something to deliver clean sound at moderate to low volume levels, and the BASS900 does the job. I believe there is something to be said for “breaking-in” a speaker – it really started to sound better after playing for several hours. Probably would not satisfy an audiophile, but for a commuter like me it works well. The owners manual is pretty good, and installation was not difficult. I used this installation kit Fusion AC-AK08E 8 Gauge pre-packaged Amplifier Installation Kit which had everything I needed to wire it behind the back seat of a Honda Ridgeline. For the price and my needs, I am satisfied with the Boss BASS900.

This is the second one we ordered, both do not work.

    Stay away from it.

This was the third one I tried. It worked great for about 1 week, then it would go into protect mode after about 5 minutes. Same problem as the first one I tried. The second one didn’t work at all. When I bought the first one there were no reviews. Now I see that this is a very common problem with these. Amazon has been great through the whole process.

I take that amazon was great comment back. They did not give me a full refund. They took money out for extra fees. The item listed as free shipping but they subtracted the shipping fee from the price I paid and kept that amount. I guess I’ll find a new place to shop if this is their attitude.
