I’m sure many people will be on the fence with this unit because Boss Audio isn’t exactly a major name in stereo equipment.

    Pro’s

    - Its cheap

    - Touch Screen isn’t overly sensative

    - Sound quality and video quality are relatively decent

    Con’s

    - Unattractive browser display (Command Prompt on Windows looks prettier)

    - Very difficult to see display during sunny days (I recommend tinted windows unless you drive only at night)

    - Very slow functions (ejecting, loading, and switching sources)

    - Awful manual and controls

To sum it up. If you are on a tight budget and can’t spend a whole lot, then it will be okay for you. However, if you have deeper pockets and an eye for aesthetics… buy a nicer unit. If I had the money I would have gone after a Pioneer.

You get what you pay for with this dvd reciever. In my experience, it does everything it claims to, but not very well and not very easily. The bluetooth function works ok as a hands-free device. I have installed a backup camera and it works well. I have had no problems loading or unloading dvd’s and/or cd’s. The menu’s are absolutely horrible and there are a bunch of functions that can only be accessed with the remote control. The user manual that comes with the unit is a joke.

As advertised is does have Ipod control onscreen, but it is barebones at most. It brings up a screen that sort-of looks like the ipod screen and allows you to choose artist, album, genre, etc…. It starts at the beginning of the alphabet, but won’t let you scroll backwards through it so it takes forever to get to the later artists. You can only play one album from an artist at a time and it will not automatically go to the next album when the first is done playing. It takes you back to the screen to choose an artist, album, genre, etc… thus making you go through the lengthy process of scrolling back down to the artist and manually choosing the next album.

The USB input is ok. I have a 16 gb flash drive with music and movies on it and it plays both the music and video just fine. Again, the user controls leave a lot to be desired, but overall it does what it says it will.

Another negative is that it seems that the unit is slightly larger than the typical double din unit. I have purchased two different install kits and have found that the unit is slightly to large to fit in the install kit. I had to take my dremel and open up the hole in the install kit in order to make it fit. This leaves the install looking less than professional. I have installed many many different car stereos and have never come up against this problem before now.

I had never purchased anything from Boss Audio before and thought I would take a chance on this unit since it had all the features I wanted at less than half the price of name brand units, but now I wish I had waited and saved enough to purchase a nicer unit.

Overall, if you have the money it is definately worth it to go with a nicer name brand unit. On the other hand, if you have a small budget and a lot of time to play with it to figure out how to use it, this unit does have a lot of features (even if they are difficult to access).

    but I didn’t listen.

This radio has four massive problems.

    1. OFF? The unit stays on. Sometimes. If I turn off the key, the radio unit may or may not turn off. This seems to be tied to whether or not a Bluetooth device is linked. Since it drained my car battery, I’m listing it.

    2. DISCS: It sucked in a DVD and didn’t play it. I was able to get it out (manually, as eject did nothing but ‘whirr’) thinking that the problem was that it was a DVD. I tried a CD – it sucked it in further so that I was not able to retrieve it.

    3. SCREEN: The ‘motorized’ screen is necessary to the operation of the unit as the whole screen moves out of the way to get to the disk slot. However, I could not get the screen to return once it had moved out of the way.

    4. MUTE button – this button mutes the unit. For 5 seconds. At which point in time the volume returns LOUDER than it was before.

Beyond that, the unit sortof worked.

The good news is that once I bought the correct universal harness from a local Best Buy, the unit was pretty easy to install.

The rear camera input worked perfect. Every time I put it in reverse, the unit switched to the rear camera and kept the audio going. Unless the unit was powered off. So, I had to turn on the radio if I wanted to see the reverse camera. Not completely perfect.

The iPod controls connected to my iPhone 3GS over the provided cable. It charged my iPhone. It also caused my iPhone to display the message about switching to airplane mode. It played music over that cable. I could not get it to display a video even though there were controls indicating it could do so.

The video quality seemed lacking, but as the only input I tested it with was the backup camera, this is possibly the camera’s fault.

The UI was atrocious. The provided manual claims that the manual was written because not all of the complex features are inherently obvious. It was right. The problem is that the manual does nothing to help with one’s understanding of said obscure functionality.

Amazon has graciously allowed me to return it. And from now on, I’m going to listen to all the different experts who say to stay away from cheap car radios.
